TheTrainLine is an online service that sells rail tickets in the UK. The company was established in 1997 began selling tickets online in 1999. TheTrainLine was initially a part of the Virgin Group but is now owned by a group of private equity investors and management. In 2004 it acquired its main online competitor Qjump from the National Express Group , to significantly expand its operations and market reach.

The service is licensed by the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) and its systems are accredited by the rail industry. However, it is independent of any train operating company and is completely impartial when it comes to finding tickets for its customers (its systems search the full range of possible journeys on the basis of the customer’s preferences of price or time. |
TheTrainLine is currently the largest retailer of UK rail tickets and accounts for the sales of 18 per cent of all rail tickets by value in the UK. All published UK rail fares and train journey times are covered, in addition to any temporary promotional fares/schemes that rail operators introduce from time to time.

TheTrainLine also provides the website services for 14 of the 20 UK train operating companies. It also delivers rail business travel services directly to a number of large blue chip corporations, travel management companies and travel agents. |
